The shaft decides more about your ball flight than the paint on the head does. Four numbers cover almost all of it: material, flex, weight and bend profile.
Steel runs roughly 95-130 g, damps very little, and gives a firm, repeatable feel. It is still the default in irons for players with decent speed and a strong tempo.
Graphite sits between about 45 g at the lightest and 90 g in a heavier iron shaft. It is lighter, kills vibration, and lets most players swing a fraction faster. Drivers, fairway woods and hybrids are graphite almost without exception, and graphite iron sets are standard for ladies, seniors and anyone with joint problems.
Multi-material shafts, with a steel body and a graphite tip section or similar, exist as upcharge options. They are worth trying if steel hurts your hands but you do not want to lose the feel.
Flex is chosen on clubhead speed first, tempo second. Use driver speed off a launch monitor, not what a mate guessed on the range.

Two warnings about that table. Flex is not standardised, so one maker's R can be another's soft S. And tempo overrules speed at the margins: a smooth 95 mph swinger is often happier in R, an aggressive 90 mph swinger in S.
Weight runs from about 45 g for the lightest graphite to about 130 g for the heaviest steel. Lighter buys speed and costs a little control. Heavier stabilises the club and usually tightens dispersion.
If you feel like you lose the club at the top, or your transition is quick, a heavier shaft is often the fix that a stiffer flex is not. Ten grams is a noticeable step; five is on the edge of what most players feel.
Kick point, or bend point, is where the shaft flexes most. Low kick point launches the ball higher, high kick point flattens it out into a more penetrating flight.
Match it to the flight you already have, not the one you wish you had. A naturally high ball hitter in a low kick point shaft balloons into any wind, and loses carry the moment the weather turns.
Torque, quoted in degrees, is how much the shaft twists during the swing. Low torque, roughly 3-4 degrees, feels firmer and holds the face more stable - it suits an aggressive tempo. Higher torque, 5 degrees and up, feels softer and helps a smooth swinger get the ball up.
Mismatched, it shows up quickly. Torque too low for a smooth swing leaves the flight flat and short. Torque too high for an aggressive one costs you face stability: the strike wanders, and the miss most people report is a weak fade.
There are around fifty shaft manufacturers and several thousand models once you count every flex and weight. Charts based on clubhead speed, launch angle and spin get you into the right neighbourhood, and that is genuinely useful when you cannot get to a fitting.
But it stays an estimate until you hit it. If a launch monitor is out of reach, get material, flex and weight right and stop there. Those three are worth far more than a boutique bend profile.
