The Approach G80 is the first all-in-one premium handheld golf GPS with an integrated launch monitor — two devices in one. Powered by Garmin radar technology, it tracks club head speed, ball speed, smash factor, swing tempo and estimated distance with every swing, helping you refine your technique on the driving range or at home. On the course, it delivers precise GPS distances, full-color CourseView maps for more than 41,000 courses worldwide, and a rich set of scoring and navigation tools — all on a large, sunlight-readable 3.5" touchscreen.
The Approach G80 is the first golf GPS device to incorporate built-in radar launch monitor technology. Simply place the device approximately 30 cm in front of your ball at address, and after each shot the device instantly measures club head speed, ball speed, smash factor, swing tempo and estimated carry and roll distance. All data is displayed immediately after every swing — on the range, at home with a golf net, or even during a round on the course. The quick-access radar button on the side of the device lets you open launch monitor data with a single press, so there is no interruption to your rhythm.
The large 3.5-inch transflective TFT color capacitive touchscreen (resolution 282 × 470 pixels, display area 45.7 × 76.1 mm) is easy to read even in bright sunlight. The slim, pocket-friendly form factor (58.7 × 114.2 × 16.1 mm, 119 g) puts an extraordinary amount of information at your fingertips. A Big Numbers Mode enlarges all yardage figures so they remain perfectly legible when the device is lying flat on the ground during a training session. The rear case features a small divot that allows the G80 to rest perfectly on a golf ball for an optimal viewing angle.
More than 41,000 detailed, full-color golf course maps are stored directly on the device — no internet connection, no downloading, no subscription fees. Simply power on and the G80 automatically locates the nearest course using its built-in GPS receiver. On each hole you have access to distances to the front, middle and back of the green, all fairway hazards, layup positions, doglegs and any custom-targeted point you tap directly on the touchscreen. Touch Targeting lets you tap anywhere on the hole view to instantly receive the distance to that point plus the remaining distance to the pin — ideal for planning a layup or approach. Courses update automatically when connected via the Garmin Golf app.
PinPointer uses GPS to display the precise direction and distance to the flagstick even when you have no direct line of sight to the green — invaluable on blind shots where terrain or vegetation blocks your view. PlaysLike Distance goes further by adjusting the displayed yardage to compensate for uphill or downhill slope on the fairway, giving you the true playing distance rather than the straight-line GPS figure. The flag position on the Green View can also be repositioned manually to match the daily pin location, increasing putting approach accuracy. Both features can be turned off instantly for tournament play that prohibits distance-adjustment aids.
The G80 offers four dedicated modes designed to build a better swing and keep practice entertaining. Warm Up gives you free-form ball striking with instant feedback on every metric after each shot — choose any club and focus on producing consistent data. Tempo Training evaluates your backswing-to-downswing ratio and coaches you toward the ideal 3:1 ratio (e.g. 1.2 sec backswing to 0.4 sec downswing), providing immediate feedback on consistency. Target Practice sets a specific target distance and shows you a visual representation of how close each ball landed to the mark, sharpening distance control. Virtual Round lets you play a simulated round on any of the 41,000 preloaded courses right from the driving range — each swing advances you virtually along the fairway toward the hole, using only carry distance.
Virtual Round mode turns any driving range session into a competitive round — play solo, challenge a friend standing next to you, or go head-to-head with players around the world via the Garmin Golf app. The free Garmin Golf app synchronizes your scores, statistics and round data to an online golf journal for detailed post-round analysis. Track how many rounds you have played on each course, review hole-by-hole and shot-by-shot statistics, and monitor improvements over time. The digital scorecard supports Stroke Play, Stableford, Skins Game and Match Play for up to four players simultaneously, with optional adjustable handicaps for each player.

The Approach G80 stores detailed maps for more than 41,000 golf courses worldwide and uses its built-in GPS receiver to automatically identify the nearest course the moment you power on. During play it continuously shows your current position on the hole layout, with live yardages to the front, middle and back of the green, all hazards, layup markers and doglegs. Touch Targeting lets you tap any point on the hole view and instantly see the distance to that spot plus the remaining distance to the pin — perfect for planning a layup or a tight approach over water. The PinPointer feature computes the direction and distance to the flagstick even when it is completely out of sight behind a hill or dense rough. PlaysLike Distance calculates a slope-adjusted yardage that reflects whether you are hitting uphill or downhill — so the number you see truly represents the distance you need to play, not just the GPS straight-line figure. This feature can be switched off in seconds for tournament rounds where artificial distance aids are not permitted.
Green View allows you to zoom in on the green and drag the flag icon to match today's actual pin position, delivering more precise approach distances. Big Numbers Mode enlarges all figures on screen so yardages are easy to read even when the device is clipped to a bag or lying on the ground. The integrated digital scorecard handles Stroke Play, Stableford, Skins Game and Match Play simultaneously for up to four players, each with a customizable handicap. After the round, data syncs via Bluetooth to the Garmin Golf app and the Garmin Connect online journal, where you can review hole-by-hole stats, fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts per round and overall scoring trends across every session you have ever played.
The Approach G80 is the first device in which Garmin deployed radar technology specifically for measuring golf shots. To use the launch monitor, simply position the device approximately 30 cm (12 inches) in front of the ball at address. After each swing, the G80 instantly calculates and displays club head speed, ball speed, smash factor, swing tempo and estimated carry and roll distance. The key to improving consistency is keeping all of these numbers as close as possible from swing to swing — the G80 makes it instantly visible when a swing is an outlier. Because the device is compact and battery-powered, you can take it to any driving range or use it year-round at home with a golf net in the garage or garden.
The four training and game modes each address a different aspect of practice:
Warm Up — Free-form hitting mode. Select any club, hit as many balls as you like, and receive a full data readout after every shot. The goal is to minimize variation in your numbers across a session, building the muscle memory of a repeatable swing.
Virtual Round — Simulates a full round on any of the 41,000 preloaded courses. Each shot advances you along the fairway toward the hole using your measured carry distance, regardless of direction. You can play alone, with a partner on the same range, or challenge friends anywhere in the world who also have an Approach G80 device. Scores are logged and can be compared in the Garmin Golf app.
Target Practice — Assigns a specific target distance and evaluates each shot against it. A visual target graphic on screen shows how close each ball came to the desired carry, helping you sharpen distance control and dial in your gaps between clubs.
Tempo Training — Analyzes the ratio of your backswing time to downswing time. The generally accepted ideal ratio is 3:1 (for example, a 1.2-second backswing paired with a 0.4-second downswing). Your personal ideal ratio may differ, but the critical factor is consistency — each successive swing should produce a similar number. Tempo Training provides instant feedback so you can correct rhythm in real time.
