The PING i230 is a Tour-proven, players-style iron built around the principle of hitting precise yardages shot after shot. Its five-piece multi-material construction keeps dispersion tight and ball speeds remarkably stable across the face. The compact head shape — with slightly reduced long-iron blade length compared to the i210 — gives better players the confidence of a workable, tour-preferred look at address, while the optimised centre of gravity ensures maximum energy transfer to the ball on every swing.
At the heart of the i230 is a concealed activated elastomer insert that is one-eighth the density of stainless steel. By replacing heavier material in the cavity, PING freed up 21 grams of discretionary weight that is strategically repositioned to lower the centre of gravity. A lower CG produces a higher, longer ball flight without altering the refined head profile. The four-layer cavity badge works in concert with the elastomer to dampen unwanted vibration frequencies, producing a quiet, confident "tock" at impact that barely changes even on off-centre strikes.
The i230 iron head is assembled from five carefully selected materials: a 431 stainless steel body provides a strong, stable foundation with excellent ball-speed retention; tungsten weights positioned at the toe and shaft tip extend the perimeter weighting for higher MOI and improved off-centre forgiveness; the activated elastomer insert occupies the cavity; and a four-layer multi-material badge ties the rear of the club together visually and acoustically. This combination delivers the feel of a compact players' iron with the consistency and forgiveness of a more game-improvement design.
PING's proprietary precision-milled MicroMax grooves run across the fully machined face, delivering repeatable spin rates on every shot whether the grass is wet or dry. The tighter groove geometry maximises contact surface area to generate consistent backspin — critical for stopping the ball on approach shots to tight pins. The Hydropearl chrome finish is hydrophobic, channelling moisture away from the face at impact so rain and dew do not compromise your spin numbers. In the long irons, the machined face promotes more consistent launch; in the short irons it gives precise trajectory and spin control for confident scoring.
The i230's more rounded leading edge geometry creates smooth, predictable turf interaction from a wide range of lies and turf conditions. Increased bounce is built into the sole progressively across the set, helping the club glide cleanly through the turf rather than digging. This design encourages pure ball-first contact with minimal disruption at the point of impact, translating directly into cleaner strikes, more consistent ball flights, and greater confidence when playing from tighter lies or firmer fairways.
The stock graphite shaft option for the i230 is the PING ALTA CB Black, a counter-balanced design that delivers a mid-to-high launch profile with excellent stability through the swing. Available in three flexes — Soft-Regular (65 g), Regular (72 g), and Stiff (82 g) — the ALTA CB Black is engineered to complement the i230 head's performance characteristics by maintaining a consistent, repeatable feel from iron to iron. The lighter graphite option reduces overall swingweight by approximately 2–3 points compared to the steel equivalent, making the set more accessible for players who prefer a lighter overall setup.

These are design specifications that may vary due to manufacturing tolerances. Lie angle is based on the Black Colour Code at standard length. Club bounce angles will vary slightly if ordered with non-standard loft specifications. Standard swingweights for graphite-shafted clubs are 2 to 3 points lighter than shown, depending on shaft flex. Available for right-handed and left-handed golfers.
The PING Colour Code Chart is a fitting tool used to determine the optimal iron specifications for each individual golfer, based on their physical measurements — specifically height and wrist-to-floor distance — and swing dynamics. Each colour in the chart represents a specific combination of iron specifications, principally Lie Angle and Shaft Length, and also informs the appropriate Grip Size selection. Getting these three parameters right is essential for maximising accuracy, consistency, and comfort over a full round of golf.
By consulting the PING Colour Code Chart, golfers and fitting professionals can identify the precise colour code that corresponds to the ideal specification combination. A taller player with a flatter swing, for example, will require a very different colour code to a shorter player with a more upright swing plane.
