Technology in Detail
Tour-Proven Design
The tour-inspired 8620 carbon steel head is investment-cast to deliver a soft feel and a clean, compact shape that better players demand. The head features a straighter lead edge compared to previous PING wedge models, which is especially beneficial on full shots by providing cleaner contact and more predictable ball flight. An elastomer insert is positioned behind the face to further refine the feel, making each shot feel crisp and responsive. The compact head profile at address also features an improved hosel transition with constant offset, blending seamlessly into PING's Blueprint S and T iron sets for a cohesive look throughout the bag. The Hydropearl 2.0 Chrome finish reduces friction between the face and the ball in wet conditions, maintaining spin performance when the weather turns.
WebFit Wedge App
Finding the right s159 grinds to bring out the best in your short game has never been simpler. The new WebFit Wedge app is a robust, browser-based fitting tool — no download and no login required. Answer a few straightforward questions about your short game tendencies, typical playing conditions, and swing style, and the app will recommend the ideal s159 grind and loft combination within minutes. This consumer-facing fitting technology represents a major step forward in making tour-level wedge customization accessible to golfers of all skill levels, ensuring that every player can build a properly gapped, grind-matched wedge set with confidence.
More Grooves. More Spin.
The s159 features wheel-cut, precision-milled grooves engineered to varying dimensions depending on loft, giving each wedge in the set the groove geometry best suited to its role. On the 46° to 52° models — designed for full and partial shots — grooves are milled with a 20-degree sidewall to maximize groove volume and deliver greater control on approach shots. The 54° to 62° models feature more tightly spaced MicroMax grooves that are engineered to generate maximum spin, particularly on the delicate shots played into and around the greens. In combination with the friction-adding face blast treatment, these precision-milled grooves provide the launch and spin control needed to attack pins from any distance or lie.
Friction Face
The Friction Face treatment on the s159 uses a face-blast process that adds micro-texture to the striking surface, increasing friction between the clubface and ball at impact. Combined with the precision-milled groove pattern, this results in enhanced spin rates and more consistent launch conditions across all types of shots — full swings, pitch shots, chips, and bunker escapes. The technology is designed to work in tandem with each grind's sole geometry, allowing every loft/grind combination to deliver reliable, score-lowering short-game performance from every distance and every type of lie.
Standard Shaft & Grip
Each s159 Chrome is equipped with the PING Z-Z115 Wedge steel shaft, a lightweight option weighing 111 g in Wedge flex with a lower balance point for enhanced feel at the clubhead — helping golfers sense clubhead position throughout the swing. The standard grip is the PING 360 Dyla-Wedge Lite, which is three inches longer than a traditional grip and features a reduced taper profile. This design allows golfers to grip down on the club for more feel and control, opening up a wider variety of shot shapes, trajectories, and distances — a critical advantage for golfers who rely on touch and creativity around the greens.
Six Sole Grinds Explained
The s159 lineup features six distinct sole grinds — W, B, S, H, T, and E — covering every swing type, turf condition, and shot preference. The S Grind is the versatile all-rounder (46°–60°), suited to a wide range of conditions and techniques, with ample mid-section bounce for full shots and heel/trail-edge relief for greenside versatility. The W Grind (54°–60°) maximizes ground contact forgiveness for steep attackers with strong handle lean. The new B Grind (58°–60°) suits shallow angles and neutral face delivery, sitting low on firmer turf. The new H Grind (54°–60°) is a half-moon sole for steep attackers who like to manipulate the handle, performing best in softer conditions. The T Grind (58°–62°) is the most versatile face-manipulation option, ideal for medium-to-firm turf, now including a new 62° option. The E Grind (54°–60°) is the ultimate bunker club, continuing a 40-year PING tradition of sand-saving performance.
