Description

PING G440 men's irons, steel

Modern game-improvement irons with a players' aesthetic. The PING G440 irons combine distance, exceptional forgiveness, and an attractive players-style look. A more flexible face, the next-generation PurFlex cavity badge, and a low/back centre of gravity generate increased ball speed, a higher trajectory, and longer shots that stop closer to the hole. Longer shaft lengths in the 4-, 5- and 6-irons help launch shots higher and maintain consistent yardage gaps throughout the set.

Ideal for:

  • Golfers who want highly forgiving irons with modern technology, yet prefer a compact, players-style address look.
  • Mid-to-higher handicap players seeking consistency in distance gaps and confidence on approach shots.
  • Players looking for a versatile, long-term set with shaft customisation options (steel or graphite, HL variant) to match their swing speed.

Key Features

  • PurFlex Cavity Badge: Next-generation badge expands and contracts at impact for greater distance while improving feel and sound.
  • Low/Back CG: Shallower, thinner face saves weight repositioned low and deep in the head, lowering the centre of gravity for more ball speed with tight dispersion.
  • Thinner, Faster Face: Reduced face height, shorter blade length, and a thin topline deliver a players-iron aesthetic with game-improvement forgiveness and consistency.
  • Longer Long Irons: The 4-, 5- and 6-irons are 1/8" longer than the G430, boosting ball speed, launch, and gap consistency across the set.
  • Sand Saver 56° Wedge: Inspired by the iconic EYE2 design with a bounce profile, sole design, and slimmer hosel for versatile bunker escape.
  • High MOI Construction: High moment of inertia maintains ball speed and accuracy on off-centre strikes.
  • Premium Chrome Finish: Chrome surface treatment on the back of the head and inside the badge delivers a premium, refined appearance.
  • Available in Right- and Left-Handed Models: Full range of hand orientations and set configurations available to suit every player.

Technology in Detail

Premium Performance — PurFlex Cavity Badge

The next generation of PING's PurFlex badge sits within the cavity and is engineered to expand and contract dynamically at the moment of impact. This controlled flexing contributes to greater ball speed and longer distances without sacrificing the soft, satisfying feel and sound that better players demand. A chrome surface treatment is applied to the rear of the head and to the interior of the badge, delivering a refined, premium look that sets the G440 apart from purely utility game-improvement irons.

Low CG, High MOI

The shallower and thinner face design of the G440 is a deliberate weight-saving measure: the mass liberated from the face is repositioned lower in the head and pushed further back toward the sole. This dual relocation reduces the centre of gravity (CG) to promote a higher, more penetrating ball flight with increased carry distance. Simultaneously, the high moment of inertia (MOI) resists twisting on off-centre strikes, keeping dispersion tight even when contact is not perfect — a critical benefit for mid-handicap players seeking consistency on every approach.

Thinner, Faster Face

The G440's face is designed with reduced face height and a shorter blade length compared to traditional game-improvement irons, while the thin topline creates the clean, compact look at address that better golfers prefer. Despite this players-style silhouette, the face engineering delivers genuine forgiveness on mishits and produces consistent ball speeds across the face. The result is an iron that bridges the gap between pure performance irons and game-improvement designs, appealing to mid-handicappers who refuse to compromise on aesthetics.

Longer Long Irons

PING has increased the shaft length of the 4-, 5- and 6-irons by 1/8" relative to the previous G430 generation. This seemingly small change has a meaningful effect on performance: extra shaft length promotes greater club head speed through the hitting zone, which translates directly into higher ball speed, a higher launch angle, and additional carry distance from the longer end of the bag. Crucially, the progressive length design also helps to standardise distance gaps between adjacent clubs, so the step from long iron to mid-iron is predictable and reliable on every course.

Sand Saver — 56° Wedge

The G440 56° wedge is directly inspired by the legendary PING EYE2 design, one of the most revered sand wedge profiles in the history of the game. It features a carefully engineered bounce profile and sole design that glide through sand and soft turf with minimal resistance, making bunker escapes significantly easier. The slimmer hosel gives the club a more refined look, while also allowing for improved versatility around the green — whether you're hitting a standard explosion shot, a bump-and-run, or a flop from a tight lie.

Shaft

PING AWT 3.0 Steel shaft — Regular (96 g), Stiff (102 g), X-Stiff (114 g)
Alternative shafts available on request.

The PING AWT 3.0 (Ascending Weight Technology) steel shaft uses lighter shafts in the longer irons to promote greater speed and maximum launch height, while heavier shafts in the shorter irons deliver control and precision. The PING Alta CB Blue graphite shaft is a lightweight, balanced option designed to promote a mid-high to high launch angle. Additional aftermarket shaft options — including True Temper Dynamic Gold, KBS Tour, and Nippon N.S. Pro Modus 3 — are available for players with specific performance requirements.

These are design specifications that may vary due to manufacturing tolerances. Lie angle is based on the Black Colour Code at standard length. Club bounce angles will vary slightly if ordered with non-standard loft specifications. Standard swingweights for graphite-shafted clubs are 2 to 3 points lighter than shown, depending on shaft flex. Achievable swingweights depend on shaft, length, and grip combinations. Available in left- and right-handed models.

Power Spec Loft is a fitting option for players looking to boost their iron distance or decrease spin to achieve a desired trajectory window. This custom-designed loft configuration delivers a calculated power boost without sacrificing the integrity of the club's design.

Retro Spec Loft is a fitting option for players less concerned with overall distance and more focused on precision, a higher trajectory, and greater stopping power. This loft configuration yields functional distance gaps suited to a 3-wedge setup or a more classic loft specification.

PING Colour Code Chart

The PING Colour Code Chart is a fitting tool used to determine the optimal iron specifications for an individual golfer, based on their physical measurements (height and wrist-to-floor distance) and swing dynamics. Each colour code represents a specific combination of iron specifications — primarily lie angle and shaft length — ensuring that the club sits correctly at address and that the ball is struck with the most efficient impact geometry possible. Correct grip size is also an important part of the fitting process.

  • Lie Angle: The angle between the shaft and the ground. An incorrectly fitted lie angle causes the ball to miss its intended target left or right, regardless of swing quality. The PING colour code system fine-tunes this angle to your individual measurements.
  • Shaft Length: Shaft length influences posture, swing plane, and ultimately distance and accuracy. Longer shafts generally promote greater distance, while shorter shafts offer improved control. PING's colour code system adjusts shaft length in 1/4" increments above or below standard.
  • Grip Size: Correct grip size affects comfort, feel, and control. Golfers with larger hands may benefit from mid-size or oversize grips for better control, while players with smaller hands often prefer standard or undersize grips for enhanced feedback and feel.

Using the colour code chart, golfers and club fitters can identify the correct specification code. For example, a taller player with a flatter swing may require a different colour code than a shorter player with a more upright swing plane. A proper fitting ensures that the PING G440 irons perform to their full potential for your game.
